This is a lab that I went in to thinking it would be a challenge, and it kind of was. It required more preparation than the previous labs, and ag. mechanics isn't exactly my strongest facet of agriculture. I wanted to do something that did not require a lot of equipment after lugging around that blender and portable blender for my interest approach lab, so I chose electrical wiring. I wanted to demonstrate how to wire a single outlet -- pretty basic.

As I was demonstrating, I felt like the lab was going well. I just felt like there was a lot of time during when the students were wiring that could have been used better. Also when the first group of students was wiring during the passing exercise, the other students were sitting there not engaged. This is something that I should have considered before I planned that activity.

I keep forgetting to make my objectives visible. This is something that I WILL do during the technology lab. The feedback I got also said I was not enthusiastic, which from watching my video I can see now. At the time I didn't even think of it but I just disappointed myself.

Another thing I forgot was my job operation sheet. This was from a lack of preparation.

All in all, my skills need much improvement. I need to plan better, write better lesson plans, and eliminate the time that my students are not engaged. Hopefully these will come with practice. Feedback appreciated.

  1. Hi Tyler,

I agree, this lab was tough, not only completing the lab but also thinking about what to do for my lab. Until I talked to Laura I was clueless. Once I had my demonstration topic I thought it would be simple to teach but it wasn't like I had thought.

I think that since we were unsure of the topic ourselves it was hard to teach with enthusiasm because we we're to focused on knowing the content and delivering it properly.

This was our first lab that was more of teaching rather than presenting, so I think there is definitely room for improvement especially in preparation like you had mentioned, because I think we have all realized now we don't just wake up and teach, it takes work. but I think you'll do just fine!

  2. Hi Tyler; I think that you are right about how hard it is to figure out what you want to do for this lab. I am still trying to decide! I think because there is so much out there for us to do, that it can be difficult to narrow everything down and really decide on one topic. I also agree with what Annette said about being focused on knowing our content. I know that I personally get so focused or relaying everything correctly that I forget to get that enthusiasm in there and I also forget that I need to simply my words and directions. I would just make sure you use this lab as a learning experience for the next one. We all learn each time we teach and we can only get better as we go! :)

  3. Hey Tyler,
Enthusiasm! It seems to be the reoccurring theme for all of us! I completely feel for you there, I prepare and feel super confident... However, during the actual lab things just do not go the way I hope in terms of being excited and upbeat. I think you had a good idea however, I don't think any of our labs are going the way we hope. I can definitely say preparation is critical! I know that I was super well prepared and completely confident, although I didn't execute my lab with excitement and enthusiasm. Keep working at it we can do this!

  4. Hey Tyler,

I too thought my ab started out well and was pretty basic, however, I didn't prepare well either, I think this is some thing that we are all learning(not to just let it float because it is basic) and I'm sure that the more we practices and get back up when we fall we will improve ten fold.
With enthusiasm I think we are all missing it just because we are teaching or demonstrating a topic that we are not comfortable with and as a result we are thinking to hard on it and forgetting to be excited about learning with our students.
Keep up the hard work, You can do this !!
